a book about the past is memory with a plot. constructing a plot entails an act of trimming, of cutting off unstructrable elements. a book about the past never recall everything. the rule applies to Indonesia in the Soeharto years: issues, incidents and images. this book is an attempt to create an album of Indonesia from 1965 to 1998. it is a kind of a orde-memorie, put together with enthusiasm and with a sevise of inadeguancy. the compiler is only one element in providing meaning and meaning is necessarily polyvalent. in a way, this is a book about the new order with a different way of looking at the regime's history and it's histiography. the epic approach is well established. after 1966, many cities in Indonesia modern history. like the television dramas shown on independence day, the monuments, full of strapping men, weapons at the ready, celebrate the memory of Indonesia guerrilla warface.
